Overview[]
After successfully getting the first Relic in Mistral, the next step is to take it to General Ironwood in Atlas. But things don't go smoothly as our protagonists are separated, forced to walk through the dangerous Mistral wilderness and witness the history of the world, Salem and Ozpin. After they seemingly lose hope, Qrow Branwen begins descending more into his alcoholism while the team meets an old woman named Maria Calavera, who manages to save them from great dangers in the wilderness.
Meanwhile, Cinder Fall is revealed to have survived the Battle of Haven and begins wandering around the lower levels of Mistral while looking for Ruby's Group. After Adam Taurus loses the control he had over the White Fang following the Battle of Haven, he begins to pursue Blake Belladonna in order to kill her. Development[]

The first concept and writing meetings for Volume 6 began a week after the Volume 5 finale aired.[5] Voice acting recording sessions for key characters began in late May 2018.[6] During development, several people were added or promoted to key positions, including Connor Pickens, who replaced Miles Luna and Gray G. Haddock as co-director.
In an interview at RTX London 2018, Gray Haddock said matte painting backgrounds, a 2D-asset used often in the production of Rooster Teeth's mecha show gen:LOCK, would be implemented in Volume 6 in a more interactive way.[7]
On January 17th, 2018, it was announced that Volume 6 would premiere in the Fall.[8] On August 3rd, 2018, it was confirmed at RTX Austin that Volume 6 will premiere on October 27th, 2018.[9] That same day, an in-progress version of the "Volume 6 Adam Character Short" was also shown to attendees, which was later made available to the public on the 17th of August.
It was also announced that Volume 6 would only air initially on the Rooster Teeth site because many of the videos, including most of RWBY episodes that were uploaded to their main channel on YouTube, were demonetized for various reasons. However, beginning on October 12th, 2019, Volume 6 would air weekly on the Rooster Teeth YouTube channel for animation.[10] Additionally, FIRST members would be able to watch the show for an entire week before it was released to the public. The public would watch a new episode on Saturday a week after that episode went live for FIRST members.
One of the things Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross wanted to improve upon this Volume was the balance between the newer high stakes plot points and the goofier and sillier moments from older Volumes.[11]
While the Volume was originally planned to have 14 episodes like the previous Volume did, the volume ended up only having 13 episodes due to the staff believing that the final episode would work better as the beginning of the next Volume with the planned version being expanded upon in the final release.[12]
The scene involving the villains during the episode "So That's How It Is" originally took place before "The Lost Fable" in an early version of the script, but was moved after thinking about the different way people would be looking at Salem after the episode.[13]Regarding
Miles Luna created Tock and came up with the idea of the fight between Maria and Tock only being 60 seconds long due to them having a restriction on how long fights could be.[14]
The Atlesian Airships shown near the end of "Our Way" were ported over from Poser Pro and updated for Autodesk Maya.[15]
Trivia[]
- Volume 6 reuses many past cut concepts from previous volumes.
- Maria Calavera was originally planned to debut in Volume 5, where she would have guided Ruby's training.[16]
- The Apathy were planned before the release of Volume 1, and were initially considered to appear in Volume 4 before being replaced by the Nuckelavee.[17]
- The plotline involving Caroline Cordovin and the Colossus was initially created as the climax of Volume 2, before being replaced with the mission to Mountain Glenn, as the writers realized it wouldn't have been feasible at the time.[18]
- Parts of Blake and Yang vs. Adam were originally animated for Volume 3, and were remade in the Maya engine for the fight.
