Volume 5 is the fifth season of RWBY. It premiered on October 14th, 2017 on the Rooster Teeth website. In addition, theatrical screenings of the premiere were held through Fathom Events across the United States on October 12th. The volume was preceded by Volume 4 and the second season of RWBY Chibi. It was followed by Volume 6 and the third season of RWBY Chibi.
The volume had 14 episodes, and its premiere was preceded by three new character shorts.[1] Unlike in the previous two volumes, Volume 5's episodes were released to the public on Tuesdays, three days after the Saturday FIRST member release.
Volume 5 was released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 5th, 2018, but this release did not come with a "Complete" version of the volume like previous volumes. However, the Complete version of the volume would be released in parts to Rooster Teeth's website and its Animation YouTube channel starting on October 20th, 2019.

The Volume 5 online premiere date was announced at RTX Austin 2017.
Also teased at RTX Austin was a first look at the "Volume 5 Weiss Character Short", which premiered on July 17th, 2017. Character shorts for Blake and Yang premiered on September 4th and October 14th, respectively. Each short gives a flashback while also connecting it to the main timeline.
Volume 5 continued to use Autodesk Maya software, but some visual elements were added. Most notably, a third lighting layer is sometimes in use on characters.[2]
When dealing with animating crowds, the production team started using a new software called Golaem for crowd shots.[3]
After the Volume finished airing, several scenes were re-animated and added to the Blu-Ray release of Volume 5. These additional scenes were also in the complete version of Volume 5.
Early in production, this Volume was intended to include flashbacks to Cinder's backstory. Due to how much story was already in this Volume, these were pushed back to Volume 6, then 7 until they finally appeared in Volume 8 during the first scene of "Divide" and the majority of "Midnight".[4]
During production of Volume 5, the writers considered killing off Adam Taurus by the end of the Volume. However, his death pushed for the end of Volume 6 instead.
Much earlier in production, the White Fang scene in Dread in the Air was originally planned to be the opening scene of the Volume. However, they realized that it would have given the wrong tone for the Volume and moved it.[5]Regarding
The battle against the Lancer's in the skies of Lake Matsu was the biggest set by the time Volume 5 was made.[6]
During Qrow Branwen's search for Huntsmen in Mistral, he was originally planned to encounter Maria Calavera who would have a pet cat. However, her appearance was cut and she was later introduced at the beginning of Volume 6 instead.[7]
While Kerry Shawcross admitted that he was sure they weren't going to properly show Leonardo Lionheart's death, they actually did mocap the death scene with Joel Mann acting it out in case they did show it on-screen. However, this version was never used since Lionheart's death happened off-screen.[8]
