Ever After[]

The Brothers emerge from the Tree

The Brothers emerge from the Tree

Eons ago in a mystical realm known as the Ever After, two beings emerged from the Great Tree that was located at the center; a pair of brothers, one being a purple lamb and the other being a yellow fawn. Their true names unknown, they would eventually come to be known as the God of Darkness and the God of Light respectively.

After emerging from the tree's blossoms, the two Brothers used their powers to shape the realm, first by clearing away the wilderness and making it less dangerous. Then, they used their creativity to imagine what could replace the wilderness, resulting in the creation of beings known as the Afterans. Finally, they created acres for them, each vastly different and with their own rules that was suited to the purposes they gave them.

However, as time passed and the Brothers grew in power, so too did their curiosity. They eventually outgrew their role and desired to do more. As such, in secret they created two beings who would replace them. The first was the Curious Cat, who was made to be eternally curious about everything and who could find and fix the broken pieces of the Ever After. The second was the Jabberwalker, who was made to "finish what the cat started", and had the power to disrupt Ascension, thus being the only thing capable of truly destroying an Afteran by breaking their cycle of resurrection.

Seeing this, The older brother feared they had disrupted the balance of the Ever After with their creation of the Jabberwalker and thus destroyed it. However, the younger brother refused to condemn their creation because of their mistakes and restored the Jabberwalker whenever his brother destroyed it; this caused the two to fall into a bitter rivalry due to them both having different ideas of balance and how things should be.

As the two continued their destructive conflict, the Great Tree couldn't bear their actions any longer as it threatened the realm, and created a special doorway for the two to depart through to a "greater beyond", so they could create their own worlds as much as they liked. The two departed through the doorway, which the tree left open for the brothers if they ever decided to return, along with any of their creations that may happen to come across this mystical world.

Creating Remnant[]

After leaving, the two Brothers experimented by creating many new worlds, one of which that would eventually be known as Remnant. The God of Light found joy in creating forces of life. However, the God of Darkness disgusted by it and created forces of death to counteract it. Eventually, the younger brother got the idea to create something unique that shared his innate desire for destruction, the Creatures of Grimm.

Tired of their endless feuding, the God of Light proposed to his brother that they finally end their feud by making one final creation, something that they could both be proud of and to be considered their masterpiece. Ultimately, the God of Darkness agreed and together they created a new form of life, one that would have the power to both create and destroy. Additionally, this creation would also be granted knowledge to separate it from the animals as well as free will to choose whether to use their gifts for light or for darkness. This final creation would come to be known as Humanity.

The God of Light refuses Salem's plea to bring Ozma back to life

One day, while residing at the Domain of Light, the God of Light was approached by a woman named Salem who wished to have her lover Ozma, whom she lost to sickness, brought back to life. However, he denied her, stating that he must maintain the balance of life and death. Instead of giving up, Salem would then travel to the Land of Darkness where she confronted the God of Darkness and lied to him by claiming she worshipped him over his brother, unlike the rest of Humanity, and hid the fact that she visited him first. Despite supposedly sharing his brother's ideology on balance, the God of Darkness was pleased to see that he finally had a Human who appreciated him more than his brother and granted her request.

Unfortunately, the God of Light appeared and revealed to his brother the truth about Salem's deception. Angered at being used and realizing his brother was truly on his side, the God of Darkness returned Ozma back to the afterlife while the God of Light teleported the grief stricken Salem back to his domain, where he cursed her immortality. He and his brother state that they did so as punishment for her deception and only by learning the importance of life and death will she be able to rest.

Abandoning Remnant[]

Despite hoping Salem would learn from her curse, they realized that the only thing Salem learned was how to manipulate and use other people for her own ends. Traveling the world, Salem journeyed from one Kingdom to another and lied to their kings and queens by saying she managed to steal immortality from the Gods, and if they joined her in destroying their creators, they could claim their powers for themselves and perfect their own design. The Kingdoms united and formed an army that invaded the Domain of Light and attacked the Gods with their magic.

Annoyed at this, the God of Darkness effortlessly gathered all of their magic into his hand. Expressing disappointment that they would use his gift against them, he crushes it, releasing a shockwave that wipes out all of Humanity expect for Salem. The God of Light showed his disappointment as well, and claimed they would learn from this while also hoping that Salem would learn as well as he disappeared. Noting that she had learned absolutely nothing, the God of Darkness bid her a damning farewell by leaving the planet's atmosphere and crashing through the moon as he left, destroying part of it and sending fragments crashing down to the planet.

Later, the God of Light summons Ozma's soul from the afterlife to an intermediate space between realms, and offers him a chance to return to Remnant and guide them. He creates four Relics - Creation, Destruction, Choice and Knowledge - to aid Ozma in this goal, stating that if brought together, they would summon him and his brother back to Remnant where they would then judge the world's inhabitants. If Humanity had learned to set aside their differences and live in harmony with each other, then the Gods would return to live among them and make them whole again; but if Humanity had refused to stop fighting itself and still demand of the Brothers' blessings, then mankind would be found irredeemable and the Gods would destroy Remnant itself along with all of them.

Despite this, Ozma was reluctant to go back as simply wished to be with Salem and insisted that he return to the afterlife to see her, but the God of Light revealed that he wouldn't find her there due to Salem being alive but no longer the person she once was, warning Ozma that if he tried to be with her again, he would only find pain instead of happiness.

Despite this warning, Ozma agreed to the deal and the God of Light departed, stating that their creations rested upon his shoulders.
