I was one of the first to suggest violence where violence was necessary. Peace bred complacency and acceptance of our place in the world. I will not allow Humanity to push us down without pushing them back.
—Sienna Khan, to Adam Taurus

Sienna Khan was a character in RWBY. First mentioned in "The Next Step" and introduced in "Dread in the Air", she was the High Leader of the White Fang, succeeding Ghira Belladonna after he stepped down, up until she was killed and usurped by Adam Taurus in a hostile coup.

Appearance[]

Sienna was a female, Bengal[2] tiger-based Faunus with amber eyes, a dark complexion and wild black hair in an asymmetrical bob. Her Faunus trait manifested as an extra pair of ears, and her body was adorned with numerous tattoos resembling tiger stripes.[3] She wore four golden earrings on three of her ears, one on each Human ear and two on the left Faunus ear, as well as having a small jewel resembling a bindi on her forehead.

She was seen wearing a form-fitting dark gray sleeveless dress with white trim; the top part having a large diamond cutout exposing most of her back accompanied by a smaller diamond-shaped cutout just above her breasts, over which is a low-hanging long red cape that was clasped by golden rings near the crest of her top's chest cutout, as well as a gray waist cincher with red trim and a gold-buckled belt over it, which fastened a gray pouch on her right hip, and a long gray open skirt with thick white trim revealing a pair of black shorts beneath, along with over-the-knee black stockings with golden trim. Aside from that, she wore a pair of light gray wedged sandals with red laces tied to her calves, as well as a single black elbow-length fingerless glove on her right hand. She also wore a red rope with a golden bell on her left side wrapped around her waist with a matching rope wrapped around her right wrist.

Past[]

Sienna's previous attire is slightly similar to her later outfit, but is less ornamental and without a skirt. It consisted of her gray, white-trimmed sleeveless top with the same cutouts on the back and front; a pair of white pants that are partially visible under her gray low-heeled thigh boots with a large cutout on the thighs and large light gray diamond detailing around the knees; the boots seemingly reach the top of her pants but it is hidden under her top. Over her waist is a gray waist cincher with red trim that had a black golden buckled belt over it, which fastened a gray pouch on her right hip alongside a smaller rope slanted across it. Lastly, she wears a pair of red trimmed, gray vambraces on her forearms with a small red rope tied around her right upper arm.

Personality[]

Sienna was one of the White Fang's first advocates for using violence to combat Human prejudice toward the Faunus, and her very first actions as High Leader employed these methods.[4] She believed it necessary to use force in order to demand the respect of mankind, though only in acts of retaliation for continued crimes against their people rather than unprovoked acts of hate. She was known to be strong of mind and body, and perfectly willing to be violent, but not to the extent of hurting her cause on a global scale, which she believed Adam's participation in the Fall of Beacon had done by making the White Fang appear like a militant force declaring war. She was easily in touch with her anger but did not let it overrule her judgment, allowing Hazel Rainart to speak briefly after he effectively clarified he was not an enemy, and did not punish Adam for acting outside her authority, instead choosing to speak with him directly on their disagreement.

The nuances of Sienna's attitude and ideology are best illustrated by her interactions with Adam. While not as intensely prejudiced towards Humans as him and many others in the White Fang, she still regarded them with reflexive dislike and defensive skepticism. She was unconcerned about the Human lives taken by Adam, and on one occasion, only prevented him from killing a Schnee Dust Company security guard in order to focus on the mission at hand; she later encouraged him after he had accidentally killed one, only chastising him when he went too far, and due moreso to concern for the damage his excess could bring to their cause rather than the life of his victim. Despite his later activities boldly stepping beyond her approval, she underestimated the amount of support his destructive actions would earn him, such as in the Albain brothers and her own personal guard.

Though relatively level-headed for someone in her position, she was also shown to be somewhat arrogant and stubborn, being completely surprised by Adam's betrayal despite being well aware of his extremist tendencies. Upon the announcement of his coup, she stated she would not simply follow him, which was apparently predictable enough that Adam had already decided to kill her.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a High Leader of the White Fang, Sienna held supreme influence over the organization in her time. She was also fairly agile in combat and was able to easily defeat AK-130s and Human guards alike. Additionally, her genealogy as a Tiger Faunus is described as being powerful. However, she was seemingly not quick enough to prevent Adam from mortally stabbing her.[5]

Weapon[]

Main article: Cerberus Whip

Sienna's weapon of choice was Cerberus Whip, a chained whip that had three blades attached to the end. The blades were sharp enough to cut apart AK-130s with ease and each had a Dust crystal of differing types, such as Ice. The blades could also be detached from the chain to be used as projectiles.

Semblance[]

As revealed in RWBY: Amity Arena, Sienna's Semblance is called Grudge. Her Semblance's "grudge" will activate on foes that have their Aura weakened or broken, making her stronger, faster and more vicious when going in for the kill.[6][7]

Trivia[]

Allusion[]

  • She may allude to Shere Khan from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which is all the more evident as the predecessor, Ghira, may allude to Bagheera from the same story.
    • Shere Khan is a tiger, and Sienna is a tiger Faunus as indicated by her ears and stripes.
    • Both characters share the last name Khan.
    • Sienna's Semblance is likely another reference to Shere Khan who, in an ironic manner, had a crippled leg.
    • Her leadership of the White Fang, a group known for it's anti-human sentiment, mirrors Shere Khan's own hatred of humans.
    • Shere Khan was killed by being trampled by male oxen (bulls), paralleling Sienna's death at the hands of Adam, a bull Faunus.

Color Naming Rule[]

  • "Sienna" refers to a reddish shade of brown, similar to the color of her skin.
  • Khan translates as "sovereign," "king," or "military leader," in a number of languages.

Misc.[]

  • Sienna's return in the Volume 6 Adam Character Short was hinted at by Kerry Shawcross in the Volume 5 Directors' Commentary.[8][9]
  • Sienna was added to the Adam Character Short to give her more screentime, as she was a well received character and many fans were disappointed by her immediate death.[10]
  • According to her concept art, she has a small gray vambrace on her left wrist at one point.
