Yang first encounters Shay D. Mann as a drunk customer at the Just Rite fuel station. Shay is a touch lascivious, verbally appraising Yang's body. He persists in hitting on Yang despite her refusal, even going so far as to attempt to touch her hair, resulting in her knocking his tooth out and ejecting him from the building in the process. When Yang prepares to leave, Shay offers to help her find his tribe's leader, only to lure her into a forest for his fellow bandits to ambush her. Demanding compensation for his lost tooth, Shay draws his weapon at Yang, only for her to easily defeat him and all of the other bandits. Shay angrily threatens Yang with Raven's presence, only to faint in shock and disbelief when Yang reveals that she is Raven's daughter.
Later on, while standing guard, he is approached by Cinder Fall, Emerald Sustrai, Mercury Black, and Arthur Watts. When questioned about Raven's presence in the camp, he refuses to answer and decides to take his aggression out on the group instead. With Cinder's permission, Emerald draws Thief's Respite and prepares to fight Shay and the guards. It is unknown what becomes of him after this.
