- The name of the island in Japanese is written サパン島, phonetically "Sapan Shima." Since there exists no official English translation, there is some ambiguity on what the intention for the name is:
- Sappan evokes the Thai word สับปะรด which can be romanized to Sapparot. This word translates to "pineapple," which is an apt name for a tropical island.
- Sapan might be a corruption of the English word Japan. This is noteworthy as RWBY is an American-made with heavy anime influence and RWBY: The Session is a Japan-only release.
- An early fan translation effort for the light novel used the translation "Sapang," though no reason is known for that particular choice of translation. It is, however, widely used by fans due to this.
