Throughout the production of a series, a lot goes on behind the scenes in regards to planning and design, which often go through multiple stages before resulting in the final version that is seen on screen. Some concepts and ideas can have an effect on the show and characters, and unexpected occurrences during production can also lead to changes and additions to the plans for the show.

Character Basis

Sage Ayana alludes to either the Thracian sage Aesop or one of his fables (most likely The Pilgrim and the Sword). When asked during an interview, Miles Luna had said that he could not remember which of the two Sage was intended to allude to.

Appearance

Sage is first seen in the Volume 2 Opening as a 2D drawing, standing alongside his teammates. He is later introduced as a full 3D model in Volume 3, with only minor differences to his appearance:

• Slight adjustments were made to the design of the accessory on his right arm.
• His coat is more open, giving a clear view of the wings tattoo on his chest.

Production

• Sage first appears as a 2D drawing in the Volume 2 Opening and then in a distance shot in "Extracurricular" because his model was not completed at the time. He makes his first appearance as a 3D model in the Volume 3 Opening and then "New Challengers...".
