RWBY: World of Remnant was an American mini-series created by Monty Oum and produced by Rooster Teeth Productions, documenting various areas, beings, and objects in Remnant, the world in which RWBY is set.

Summary[]

World of Remnant episodes varied in length, but are on the whole much shorter than the average RWBY episode, at around 2–4 minutes in length.

Individual episodes of the series provided information on specific subjects within the RWBY universe, with narrative exposition accompanied by illustrative visuals. The art style of World of Remnant is heavily stylized and mostly rendered in 2D as compared to the 3D look of the main series.

The episodes accompanying Volume 2 were narrated by Salem (at the time known as the Mysterious Narrator). The episodes accompanying Volume 3 were narrated by Ozpin and those released with Volume 4 are narrated by Qrow Branwen.[1] Various characters from the main series also occasionally appeared as silhouettes in the videos.

Release[]

The first set of World of Remnant episodes aired on an irregular release schedule concurrent with RWBY Volume 2's original run. World of Remnant episodes aired during the main series' "off-weeks" when the main series did not have a new episode. These weeks followed the release of the episodes "Painting the Town...", "Dance Dance Infiltration" and "Mountain Glenn". Volume 2 concluded with a total of four episodes, the last of which was exclusive to the Volume 2 DVD and Blu-ray releases.[2]

The fifth World of Remnant episode was released several weeks prior to the premiere of RWBY Volume 3. In a similar fashion to the previous year, subsequent episodes aired after every third episode of RWBY.

During the week the first episode of RWBY Volume 4 was released, the ninth to twelfth world of Remnant episodes were released one day after each other and briefly stopped two days before the first episode of the volume was released. Like the episodes that aired throughout Volume 3, subsequent episodes aired after every third episode of RWBY. However, these episodes were originally exclusive to Rooster Teeth's first subscribers.

Following the end of Volume 7, all World of Remnant episodes were re-released on the Rooster Teeth animation YouTube channel with new thumbnails. This included the blu-ray exclusive episode aired during Volume 2 and the first exclusive episodes aired during Volume 4.

Trivia[]

  • On March 29th, 2016, series writer and director Kerry Shawcross asked fans to give their ideas for future RWBY: World of Remnant episodes.[3]
  • The episode The Four Maidens was originally meant to be part of the main show and was included in early script drafts for the episode "Fall", but was later cut for time.[4]
    • Due to this, Miles Luna stated one of the World of Remnant episodes they originally planned to release during Volume 3 was pushed back to Volume 4 to make room for this episode instead.[5]
  • The reason Ozpin was chosen to be the narrator for the World of Remnant episodes released during Volume 3 was so people would "forget" about Jen Taylor so that Salem's reveal at the end of the Volume was more impactful.[6]
  • Starting on February 8th, 2020, between Volumes 7 and 8, Rooster Teeth started re-releasing episodes on their new animation channel. The only difference is the new thumbnails.
  • During the RWBY: Fairy Tales AMA on Reddit, Kerry Shawcross admitted that while World of Remnant discussed most of the topics they originally wanted to address in it, there is still a possibility that new episodes for the show could still be made.[7]
  • Many of the World of Remnant episodes foreshadow future plotlines in the main show, such as the destruction of the CCTS Tower at Beacon Academy, the Bandits of the Branwen Tribe, and the Atlas Military pressuring Atlas Academy's graduates to work for the Special Operatives Unit or the Ace Operatives.
