Welcome to a Punderstorm, a weather pattern that creates a physical manifestation of a mental or emotional problem. So we appear to be at metaphorical and literal crossroads.

Punderstorms[1] are naturally occurring weather patterns in the Ever After. One passed through the Field Acre in "Confessions Within Cumulonimbus Clouds" and is the main location of the episode, affecting Team RWBY, Jaune Arc, and the Curious Cat.

The Punderstorm enveloping the Field Acre

Punderstorms are drastically different from any weather types in Remnant, though from the outside they look similar to thunderstorms. Upon passing over people or Afterans, Punderstorms absorb them in order to resolve conflicts between them. It requires settling the conflict, either emotionally or physically, in order to exit the Punderstorm or to wait until the storm itself passes.

Punderstorms also seem to react to the words and emotions of their visitors. When Weiss Schnee describes it as "the pits", a small pit opens underneath her and spits her back out high in the air. Additionally, when Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long become more open about their feelings, the color of the clouds around them change and start to clear up, with Blake's side of the bridge becoming pink and Yang's becoming yellow.

Crossroads[]

Punderstorms manifest differently in each case, and sometimes even split up absorbed groups. When Ruby Rose, Weiss, Jaune, Juniper, and the Curious Cat were absorbed, they were brought to the Crossroads. The area was designed to make Ruby and Weiss choose whether to accept Jaune or the Cat as their guide, as neither would allow the other as a guide.

Ruby and her reflection

It featured a purple cloudy sky, a liquid ground, multiple winding brick pathways diverging throughout the area with glowing archways scattered about. Upon passing through one of the pathways, the group entered a pathway filled with door-shaped liquid structures on the sides of the pathways that would reflect images back to the viewer, typically of someone or something the viewer had lost. Ruby's reflection was of Summer Rose, Weiss' was of Atlas falling, and Jaune's was of both Penny Polendina and his younger self.

Next Steps Bridge[]

Upon being absorbed into the Punderstorm, Blake and Yang are singled out and separated from the others, being placed in the Next Steps Bridge.[2] The area was surrounded by dark gray-blue clouds and was very windy.

As the skies calm, flowers bloom

It consisted of a long white pillar towering high above the clouds, with two broken, wooden, rickety bridges connected to each side. Blake and Yang were each placed on one of the bridges, with only nine steps attached to each bridge. In order to cross the bridge and reach safety, they had to be honest about their feelings to one another, which caused more steps to appear each time they did so. If they hid their feelings, the bridge would be violently swung further away from the pillar. As they prepared to confess, the clouds started to clear up and the sky's color changed to fit their color schemes. Upon confessing, they were both instantly warped onto the pillar, which started to grow grass and flowers on it.

Trivia[]

  • Its name is a fusion of the words "ponder" and "thunderstorm".
    • It also contains the word "pun", which may be a joke on the fact that its name is a pun itself between two other words.
  • As every acre in the Ever After with their diverse biomes were created by The Gods, it is possible that Punderstorms were created by them as well.
