Mantle needed me, and to the Marigolds, that meant I wasn’t their son anymore. And I made sure that everyone knew that I wasn’t their daughter.
—May, to Weiss Schnee

May Marigold[2] is a member of Robyn Hill's Happy Huntresses. She made her debut in "Sparks". She is a cousin to Henry Marigold.[1]

May is a fair-skinned woman with medium blue hair, a long butt length ponytail wrapped in white bandage-like fabric, and yellow eyes. She wears a dusty brown coat with a small split in the rear, dark brown lapels with the Happy Huntress' brooch emblem on the right lapel over a gray waistcoat and dark brown top. She also wears dark brown shorts alongside matching forearm length gloves.

May wears gray armor padding over her forearms and the backs of her hands. Alongside a pair of gray thigh socks and dark brown thigh-high boots and an orange scarf.

May has a direct and confrontational personality, being described as the "least happy" of the Happy Huntresses, and having a no-nonsense attitude. She appears to want to bring honor to the Marigold name.[3]

May appears to show both distrust and utter disdain towards the military, being shown to have no qualms against adopting an aggressive attitude towards Atlesian personnel such as Marrow Amin. However, around the Happy Huntresses, May shows a more positive side to her personality, being supportive of Robyn's political aspirations and displaying loyalty towards her, to the point of being willing to use both legal and illegal means to accomplish her goals. She is also friendly to Ruby's Group, nonchalantly and playfully joking with the group.

Powers and Abilities

May is a skilled fighter as one of Atlas Academies' top graduates. Through her Semblance, May is able to turn herself or a select area seemingly invisible from the outside, being capable of sneaking on others without being detected. May is adept at performing covert operations.[4]

Her weapon is one of the Happy Huntress' standardized weapons; two bladed-crossbows connected by a staff.

Main article: Invisibility Field

May Semblance, Invisibility Field, allows her to create an area of space around her that makes everything inside invisible to the outside and isolate it to only herself becoming invisible. May has showcased enough mastery over her Semblance to allow her to easily render multiple people invisible and create a dome large enough to shield an entire cargo truck. When casting her Semblance, those affected by May's power are also muffled when in the area, allowing for quiet communication without drawing attention. This dome can also be moved, as shown during the infiltration mission in "Strings".

  • Like the rest of the Happy Huntresses alluding to Robin Hood's Merry Men, May alludes to Maid Marian, the love interest of the outlaw Robin Hood in English folklore.[5]

Color Naming Rule

  • The name "May" is another name for the hawthorn flower, which comes in various colors.
  • Marigold is a yellow-orange flower.

  • May was designed by lead concept artist Erin Winn.
  • On December 17th, 2019, a tweet from May's voice actress stated that she is the first onscreen transgender character in RWBY.[1] This was later confirmed in the show in the episode "War."
