Background[]

Marrow is the youngest and newest addition to the Ace Operatives team. Prior to the start of the series, he graduated from Atlas Academy, joining the military as a Specialist.

Before becoming a Specialist, what drove Marrow to be a Huntsman in the past was that many people said Marrow couldn't ever be one.[1] However, beating those odds, Marrow was able to rise to the top of the ranks, becoming an Ace-Op. He is extremely appreciative and humbled by James Ironwood for being brought in as a part of the most elite group of Huntsmen in Atlas, being well aware of the social and racial tensions between Atlas and Faunus and how rare it is for his kind to be placed in such a role.[2]

Following the Fall of Beacon, Ironwood enlisted Marrow, as well as the rest of Ace-Ops, into his secret group with the goal of stopping Salem and her forces through the use of the Amity Communications Tower.

Marrow and his team confiscate unauthorized weapons

Marrow and his team were called into Mantle because of reports of a stolen Atlesian airship entering its airspace and because of the unauthorized use of weapons by civilians. The culprits were Team RWBY, Team JNPR, Qrow Branwen and Oscar Pine, who defended the city from a pack of Sabyrs. Marrow and his team caught them by surprise and seized their weapons before leaving them in the custody of the authorities.

He is later seen retelling how he was kicked out of a place at least three times to his team before the Huntsmen-in-training arrived. Following the release of their quarries, Marrow and the rest of Ace-Ops apologize for the miscommunication, before the students are introduced to Atlas Academy by Penny Polendina.

Marrow and the rest of the team encounter a Geist, who flees deeper into the mines, and a swarm of Centinels. He later defeats the Geist in the caves along with the rest of Ace-Ops.

He also aided the teams' training, and went on another mission to the SDC with Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long to help clear the Grimm from the area.

Later when Team RWBY wait for lieutenant colonel Olive Harper to find a lead on the orb they found in the tundra, they are tasked with assisting the Ace Operatives with their own missions. While Marrow completed his own mission with ease and heads back to Atlas, he accidentally left behind his goggles in the Tumak Ruins and asks Team RWBY for help getting them back. After they return them to him, he thanked them and gave them a can of grape soda he got by accident since he admitted that he didn't like grape soda.[3]

Martial Law[]

Marrow and Weiss continue to help until they are suddenly called back to Atlas Academy under direct orders from Ironwood. Team RWBY and the Ace Ops go to Ironwood's office, where he reveals that one of Salem's subordinates left a black queen chess piece on his desk. He begins panicking, questioning if everything that he and the others did was part of Salem's plan. Ironwood questions whether or not Team RWBY really is on his side and asks them how Robyn knew about the Amity Tower project. Yang confesses that she and Blake told her, leading to an argument. The argument becomes more and more heated, and suddenly, a Seer bursts out of Watts' bag, dies, and breaks open to release a smokey apparition of Salem.

Salem proclaims that Watts and Tyrian's mission was not to secure victory, but rather to set the stage for Salem herself. She then attempts to convince Ironwood to surrender but is soon distracted by Ruby delivering a speech about how they learned the truth about her from the Relic of Knowledge and will still stop her even without killing her. Salem tells Ruby that Summer Rose once said those same words but was proven wrong, causing Ruby to break down crying with her silver eyes flickering and flaring.

The Salem apparition disappears, and Marrow begins to panic, especially upon realizing that the proximity alarms along the coast near Atlas are inactive. Blake asks about the readiness to launch the Amity Tower, but Yang realizes that Ironwood just said that to lure out Watts. Ironwood then explains that he intends to raise the City of Atlas into the atmosphere instead of Amity Tower. There, the city, the two Relics and the Winter Maiden will be safe from Salem. Team RWBY protests that this plan would mean leaving people in Mantle to die due to the evacuation not being complete, but Ironwood refuses to reconsider.

Suddenly, Jaune opens a group call with Ruby, Qrow and Winter. Taking the opportunity, Ruby uses her Semblance to get past Ironwood and warn the others about his plan. Ironwood locks communications, declares that Team RWBY are under arrest, and leaves while the Ace-Ops get ready to detain them.

Marrow insists that he's only trying to arrest them, and that she was taking things too far, seeming as though she wants to kill RWBY. Harriet does not deny this, and instead says it's necessary.

Harriet and Elm accuse Penny of stealing the Winter Maiden powers from Winter Schnee, depriving her of her destiny, and goad Penny into fighting alone. Penny is eventually subdued, but when the heroes attack the Ace Ops, they lose control of her. Ironwood starts to order reinforcements, but Watts stops him, ordering the Ace Ops to swipe one sword loose from Floating Array. Marrow and Harriet later return Watts to his cell, where the latter accuse Qrow of murdering Qrow. This angers Robyn, who nearly goads Harriet into a fight before she is stopped by Marrow.

As Ruby begins to send out a broadcast to the world about Salem, the Relics, the Maidens, and the ongoing situation in Atlas, Harriet angrily switches off the screen that which the rest of the Ace Ops and Ironwood were watching it. He then orders Winter Schnee to take the Ace Ops and search for Penny.

En route to Penny, the operatives intercept and open comms broadcast from Yang's Group. As Winter, Harriet, and the group begin to argue, a series of earthquakes shake the tundra and Mantle, and soon after, the river of Grimm produces a massive geyser that manages to puncture Atlas' Hard-Light shield, leaving the two groups in shock.

The Ace Ops then arrest Yang's Group in the Solitas tundra. Upon seeing Monstra, Jaune points out that that is where The Hound took Oscar Pine, but some of the Ace Ops insist that Grimm do not take prisoners. Winter contacts Ironwood, who informs her of a plan for her and the Ace Ops to carry a bomb into Monstra to blow it up from the inside. This sparks concern from Jaune, Ren and Yang, who fear this would endanger Oscar, and they insist on rescuing him first.

Winter listens to the Ace Ops and Yang's Group debate, silently conflicted. Jaune attempts to convince Winter to let them rescue Oscar by saying the Ace Ops could use them as a scouting team, but the Ace Ops feel it is foolish to risk three lives to save one ally. Ren stands and argues that no one is replaceable, and he soon notices that his Semblance]has a new ability - reading emotions. With this ability, he realizes that the Ace Ops have been fighting how they truly feel about each other, and he even looks down at himself, seeing his own true emotions. Harriet and Elm are angered by Ren verbalizing how they truly feel, and Winter steps in to prevent a fight and states that they will go through with Jaune's plan. Harriet objects, but Winter pulls rank to silence her and tells Yang's Group that they have a time limit. The Ace Ops drop them off, and just before Ren exits the ship, he tells Marrow and Winter that they no longer want to be part of any of this.
