The Jinxy Peddler, also known simply as Jinxy, is a merchant and entertainer in the Ever After, first appearing in the episode "Altercation at the Auspicious Auction" of Volume 9. They were encountered by Team RWBY in their search for Yang's Prosthetic Arm.
Appearance[]
Jinxy appears as a walking and talking light purple raccoon. They hold a wooden cane and wear a beige robe. Jinxy also has purple harem pants on.
Personality[]
Jinxy has a habit of stealing belongings without being noticed or picking up random objects that catch their eyes. They also have an interest in emotions or memories, having them as a price for their auctions.
Though they are a wile thief and swindler, Jinxy does have some integrity as they willingly paid back the hug as refund after their scam was revealed.
History[]
Some time ago, Jinxy managed to steal the dagger that belonged to Alyx and used their ability to disguise it. When Alyx tried to barter with them to get it back, she was forced to give up both her happiest and saddest memories.
By the time Team RWBY reach the Ever After, Jinxy steals Yang Xiao Long's prosthetic arm while she was still unconscious and transformed it into a scepter using their powers. Around this time, they also come across one of the remaining blades of Floating Array and transformed it into a jade marionette. Later in the King's Acre, Jinxy set up their shop and had a sale with three of the items in their possession.
During the auction, Jinxy sold one of their items to one of the locals for the price of a hug. When they auctioned Yang's arm disguised as a scepter, both Yang and one of the toy soldiers attempted to buy it. When Jinxy stated their price being to give up what it feels to be loved however, Yang couldn't accept it while the toy soldier willingly gave Jinxy whatever they wanted and got the scepter as a result.
When Ruby Rose wanted to obtain the Jade Marionette, Jinxy stated their price to be enough hope to fill the jar in their hands. When Ruby couldn't produce enough hope however, Jinxy genuinely felt pity that she couldn't do it. At that moment however, Little tried to steal the Jade Marionette while Jinxy wasn't looking and caught them in the act. Unfortunately, Jinxy's illusions wore off at that moment and revealed the items for what they really were with both Floating Array and Yang's Prosthetic Arm being taken by Team RWBY in the chaos that followed. As Jinxy tried to stop them from taking them however, the townsperson he conned asks for a refund on the hug they gave them with Jinxy willingly returning it.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Mirage Disguises: They have the ability to disguise items they stole or pick up into rare items they uses for their auctions. The disguise wears off if someone touches it before the deal was done.
- Extractions: It implies they can take away the memories and emotions of a person or creature. Blake mentions Jinxy took away Alyx’s saddest and happiest memories and the emotions associated with them in exchange for her dagger.
Trivia[]
- Other characters alternate between using he/him and they/them pronouns for Jinxy.
- According to Blake, Jinxy appears much older than she remembered them from the book. This could indicate that either Jinxy has aged considerably, though as an Afteran this seems unlikely, or that Jinxy was originally older than they were depicted in the fairy tale written by Lewis.
- Jinxy's ability to extract emotions is similar to Hanlon Fifestone's Semblance, Raw Emotion. Whether the similarity was intentional is unknown.
- Jinxy is possibly an allusion to the tanuki of Japanese mythology.
