Background[]
When Jax's mother, Luna Asturias was pregnant with Jax and Gillian Asturias, she became sick and her Aura would deplete constantly. At the time, the same would happen with Jax. It was thought to be a condition until they realized Gillian’s Semblance had been draining them. An emergency procedure was needed to save Jax from being drained, and Luna died in the process.
When Jax and Gillian were children, their father, Finn Asturias, told them stories of Malik the Sunderer, the first king of Vacuo from 1000 years ago. He would explain they are the ancestors of Malik, as the Asturias family shared a crown-shaped birthmark, and he and Gillian were the first twins of the family to share the claim to king and queen. Due to his low Aura, Jax would have to be supplied strength by Gillian, and as such became close to her through that. He discovered his Semblance into his childhood and kept it a secret from anyone but his sister.
When Gillian decided to be a Huntress and applied to Shade Academy, he followed her and applied as well, forming a team with Argento Pocoron and Rosa Schwein. Jax would grow arrogant despite being a weak fighter, and would be expelled from Shade Academy for unknown reasons, convincing his team to follow suit. The group would form The Crown, with the goal of restoring the monarchy with him and his sister as king and queen. The Crown would hire Carmine Esclados and Bertilak Celadon, as well as others, to use their powerful Semblances to build an army to pulverize Shade and take over.
After the Fall of Beacon, Jax prepared files on powerful students, including information on Team CFVY.

RWBY: Before the Dawn[]
In RWBY: Before the Dawn, as The Crown continues to kidnap people, Jax uses his mind control to dominate them entirely. He also hires Umber Gorgoneion to serve as his personal enforcer.
Jax situates himself in The Mirage to look for powerful Semblances for his cause. When the club was investigated by Xanthe Rumpole, Jax has Carmine defeat her in battle and places Rumpole under mind control, ordering her to hamper Shade Academy's progress in stopping The Crown.
When Sun Wukong and Velvet Scarlatina investigate The Crown at the Mirage, Jax places them under mind control temporarily, though they soon escape as Yatsuhashi Daichi breaks their mind control with his Semblance.
Yatsuhashi is captured by Carmine and Umber at the Mirage, and taken to Jax in chains. Seeing CFVY as nothing more than a team of glory-seeking hotshots, Jax contemplates his plan to restore Vacuo into its old ways as equals. He thinks about how he hates everything about Yatsuhashi; envying his strength and Aura, and detesting his lack of loyalty to his native land, Mistral. Jax interrogates Yatsuhashi, trying to get him to explain his Semblance, believing that at full strength Yatsuhashi could wipe somebody completely clean of their memories. Jax offers a deal: join him and he’ll spare CFVY. Yatsuhashi declines, and is put under mind control, now serving under Jax. The would-be king announces now is their time to strike, using his Semblance to convince the others despite initial protest that they aren’t ready. He gleefully thinks of future possibilities for his army.
After this, Jax announces that now is the time for The Crown to strike with the use of their powerful army. Despite Gillian and Rosa's protests of not being ready, he forces them to comply through his Semblance, and orders them to attack Shade.
Jax is present for the Battle of Shade, leading it whilst flanked by Yatsuhashi and Umber in his guard. Soon, Jax is separated from his guard, and doesn't notice when Yatsuhashi breaks his mind control, focused on the fight. Jax confronts Theodore, who is unable to reach him due to the sheer number of Crownsmen protecting Jax, and eagerly waits as his victory draws near.
When the Grimm arrive in the city of Vacuo, the Crownsmen are attacked due to their high amounts of Aura and as such their momentum is lost. Whilst in the battle, Jax and others receive a message on their Scrolls from Sun, pleading for aid from its citizens to stop The Crown, revealing they're the ones behind the adductions in the kingdom. The citizens of Vacuo begin to aid against the Crownsmen, and The Crown begins to fall.
As Gillian realizes this, she pleads Jax to escape with her, but he insists on dying with his creation. Gillian attempts to drain his Aura as a motivator, but he uses his Semblance to force her to give him more strength. Jax is then tackled by Yatsuhashi, and the two wrestle both physically and through their Semblances. Gillian decides to aid Yatsuhashi, transferring Jax's Aura to him, and the Huntsman uses his Semblance to wipe Jax completely clean of all his memories, creating a brain damage in Jax in the process and leaving him in a vegetable state. Following this, Jax, her sister and the rest of The Crown members are arrested by the authorities, but he isn't stated to recover from entirely losing his memories.
