The Herbalist meets Alyx, Lewis and the Curious Cat
At some point in the past, the Herbalist met with Jaune Arc, the Curious Cat, Alyx and Lewis when they reached the Garden's Acre. While Lewis was uncomfortable around the Herbalist and the Curious Cat was uninterested, Alyx enjoyed his company. During their visit, the Herbalist seemingly caused something to change Alyx since she became even more paranoid and distrustful by believing that everyone was trying to stop her from getting back to Remnant. Despite his role in their journey, Lewis omitted the Herbalist from the fairy tale "The Girl Who Fell Through The World", perhaps blaming him in part for his sister's downwards spiral.

Encountering the Huntresses[]
When Team RWBY and Little enter the Garden's Acre to search for a Growgurt Parfait to return Ruby Rose's teammates to their normal size and lose sight of the Curious Cat, they encounter the Herbalist in a bunch of leaves from the Great Tree as he asks the group what they were as Ruby mentions getting sick of hearing that question. When the Herbalist gets out of the leaves and asks what question she was referring to however, the group is shocked by his appearance as Yang Xiao Long asked him what he was as he understands what they meant. As he explains his role as an Herbalist that makes concoctions to help others on their journeys, he learns that they are "Huntresses" whose role is to help the helpless and asks for his help to fix the sizes of the team.
The Herbalist fails his role and ascends
When the group reach the Herbalist's hut however, he begins to become confused by their conflicting information while making a concoction. Becoming increasingly annoyed by this, he creates a concoction using leaves from the great tree and uses it on Team RWBY due to believing it would help them realize their own roles. The concoction used caused the team to hallucinate younger versions of themselves that offered them the chance to be free of who they are and become something else. While Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long refuse the offers given to them while stating who they were and proclaimed themselves as Huntresses, Ruby Rose had a hard time answering her illusory counterpart and was driven even further into despair as a result. Before she could give her answer however, the Curious Cat broke the illusion and told the Herbalist to get away from Ruby. As the Curious Cat stated that the Herbalist had started losing his own way due to his efforts hurting Ruby instead of helping her, he gave the Herbalist a piece of his own heart as the Herbalist realized that he had failed his role and apologized,. After remarking on how peculiar Huntresses were however, the Herbalist was swallowed up by the ground of the Ever After and went through Ascension which horrified Team RWBY while the Curious Cat looked on.

The Herbalist finishes his ascension.
By the time Jaune Arc and the remainder of Team RWBY reach the Tree, they find wooden statues of both the Herbalist and Ruby Rose. As they wonder what would happen to Ruby when she came out, the Herbalist finished his ascension and broke out of the wooden statue with his lower body now comprised of two legs and fully grown butterfly wings as he flies off. The Herbalist's new form make them realize that what Ruby becomes in the end is not up to them but her.
