For the Remnant member of Justice League, see Jessica Cruz.
I used to...I used to not want it. I didn't feel like I deserved it. It's a symbol of power on my world, but it's also supposed to be a symbol of belonging. And I always wanted to belong, so badly. To fit into my skin. And yet here I was, forever different than my friends. Because the ring brought experiences that they could never imagine, that they'll never have to live through, but... but I never want them to live through. But at least, with the Ring, I always felt like I had control. I could construct whatever I wanted, whatever I could imagine, even if everything was out of my hands. And somehow in the in-between, everything got all quiet. I could find myself.
—Jessica Cruz, explaining her power to Jaune Arc

Jessica Cruz, also known as Green Lantern, is a character who first appeared in Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part One. She is loosely based on her DC Comics counterpart, Green Lantern.

Appearance[]

As a teenager, she is shown as a young pre-teen girl with lightly tanned skin, green eyes, a large green streak running from the front center to the right side, and short brown hair with green coloring underneath her hair and a cowlick sticking out at the top, closely to Yang or Raven. She wears a black and white turtleneck shirt with green lantern design in the center, sage green jacket with black and green belts on each side, sage green short shorts with black leggings, and black and white sneakers with green trimmed.

As an Adult, her design and outfit are loosely based on her RWBY x Justice League counterpart and more closely like her original counterpart.

Personality[]

It is implied that this version of Jessica has a similar backstory to her comic book counterpart before inheriting her Power Ring. As such, since she has been reverted to a teenager, her previously conquered anxiety and agoraphobia has come back to the surface. This is magnified by the fact that she has also lost her Power Ring, which she attributes her confidence to.

Jessica is timid and lacking in confidence due to the loss of her power. Even as Jaune tries to talk her up, she is self-depreciating and has no belief in herself and her abilities. However, once Jaune manages to get her to remember how it felt to have her ring and she begins to unlock her Semblance, Jessica's confidence starts to return. Upon escape from the fake Pyrrha's trap, Jessica is back in true hero form, able to confidently face down Grimm without hesitation, even without her ring.

Powers and Abilities[]

Jessica's main weapon is her Power Ring. Powered by her willpower, Jessica is able to create anything she wants out of green light. The constructs she creates are only limited by her own imagination and are completely tangible. Power Rings must be recharged every so often or else they are completely useless. The recharge cell can be summoned by reciting the Green Lantern Oath.

Tokkosho-like weapon[]

GreenLanternWeapon

A green collapsible tokkosho-like weapon that Jessica found in her locker. She doesn't use it as her primary weapon and keeps it collapsed at her left hip. When she does use it, it acts more of a conduit for her Semblance to let her fire off blades of green light.

Semblance[]

JessicaFilm Semblance

Jessica's Semblance activated

Jessica's Semblance that she gained while in Remnant is True Sight (unofficial). This ability allows her to see the true form of things around her. When boosted with Jaune's Semblance, Aura Amp, she is also given some level of control over the digital world she and everyone else is trapped in. When activated, her eyes glow bright with a faint green tint and her face marking, green under lights, and Power Ring glow. If she is not wearing her ring, a glowing, green outline of her Power Ring will appear as well.

Similar to the other members of the Justice League that were transported to Remnant, Jessica developed a Semblance during her time there. However, since her usual powers were dependent upon her Green Lantern Power Ring, her Semblance developed differently. She spent a large portion of her time in Remnant trying to unlock her Semblance, feeling unable to focus her power without her ring. However, likely due to her meek nature without her ring and a Green Lantern's power coming from one's willpower, she was unable to unlock her Semblance until Jaune managed to talk her through her feelings and help her remember what having her ring felt like. This allowed her to see past the illusion of the fake world they were in.

After being trapped by a fake Pyrrha Nikos, she and Jaune found themselves trapped in a compactor room. Again, with Jaune's help and through use of his Semblance, Jessica was able to find her resolve and, upon reciting the Green Lantern Oath, was able to somehow change the room and allow the two of them to escape.

Weaknesses[]

As a Green Lantern, Jessica’s power is dependent on her willpower as well as her Power Ring. Without either of those, she is unable to form the constructs that Green Lanterns are known for. Without her ring, Jessica is timid, due to her previous trauma-induced anxiety, which also hampers her abilities since they are tied to will. This mental state also makes it difficult for her to tap into her Semblance.

After some soul searching, and some help from Jaune, Jessica is finally able to unlock her Semblance, but she is still unable to fight with her constructs until getting her ring back.

While not directly referenced in the film, Power Rings must occasionally be recharged. Theoretically, if Jessica goes too long without recharging her ring, she would also be unable to fight.

In Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part Two, on Kilg%re's suggestion, Arthur Watts developed a way for his Artificial Grimm to counter and weaken Jessica's constructs. Causing her brief bits of pain when utilizing her ring or weakening her constructs when Kilg%re in a Beringel body managed to take hold of her construct and shatter it.

Trivia[]

Color Naming Rule[]

  • Since Jessica is not a native of Remnant, her name does not have to adhere to the Color Naming Rule. However, her hero's name, Green Lantern, has the color green in it and therefore can fit the rule.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Unlike her original RWBY x Justice League counterpart, Jessica appears to be younger and closer to her pre-teen or early teens rather than being a young woman.
  • This iteration of Jessica's appearance looks reminiscent of Ben Tennyson's design in the original series of Ben 10 as well as taking inspiration from one of his alien's design from the original series, Upgrade.
    • While the similarity in appearance is likely a coincidence, both Jessica and Ben are humans who come into possession of an alien item that allows them to be a hero in their world.
    • Ben's alien Upgrade is able to manipulate computers and machinery which parallels Jessica's ability to manipulate the digital Remnant she is trapped in.
