Multiple verses in this song subtly reference other opening songs in a distressing way:
- The lines "We said goodbye to all the things we loved" and "Left our soltitude, our carefree peace" references the Volume 2 Opening "Time to Say Goodbye".
- "We tried to rise" references the Volume 6 Opening "Rising".
- "Our plans of triumph torn apart" references the Volume 5 Opening "The Triumph".
- "Will this be the day that we always feared?" references the Volume 1 Opening "This Will Be the Day".
The verses "Some dreams will rot on the vine" and "Some lives will end much too soon" foreshadowed the deaths of Vine Zeki and Penny Polendina at the end of Volume 8.
"Some evil will never, ever die" could refer to Salem and her immortality.
"Some heroes choose the wrong side" could refer to James Ironwood and the Ace Ops' betrayal at the end of "Gravity".
The verse "Sometimes it's worth it all to risk the fall" is referenced in the description of "The Final Word".
The lyric "Strength's not victory" refers to Salem's line "there will be no victory in strength" in the beginning of RWBY's very first episode.
