Essen is a small town in the former Kingdom of Atlas, located on the eastern shore of the largest lake on Solitas. It is a rural town that survives mostly off imports from the nearby village of Dormir.
It is unknown if the town survived the destruction of the Kingdom in "The Final Word".
Description[]
Essen is a village shown with shacks made from wood and roofs made of straw. The village also had a large windmill as well as silos, hinting that the village is a farming settlement.
Close to the village are caves that go underground and are infested with Grimm. The caves contain naturally occurring Combustion Dust.
History[]
Some point after leaving the Atlas Military, Bram Thornmane became one of the guardians of Essen. Eventually, Team BRIR showed up and started protecting the people around the area from the Grimm in exchange for payment. Bram became angered by these attempts and tried chasing them away. Secretly however, Bram and Team BRIR were actually working together in a conspiracy against General James Ironwood led by Bram himself.
Team RWBY went to Essen to investigate reports of increased Grimm activity in the area. They met up with one of the guardians of the village, Russet Ka, who asked them for help with forging new armor for himself using two essential ore. After helping certain residents around the area such as helping Cerise Claire her her precious book containing the history of her ancestors that fought during the Great War and giving the pickaxe they receive from her to Zure Ayu visiting from Dormir so she can mine Combustion Dust in the caves, Team RWBY managed to obtain two essential ore and made new armor for Russet using his schematics which they gave to Pietro Polendina to make. After giving him the new armor, he told Team RWBY about the Megoliath trapped in the area of the settlement close to the windmill and that they might have no choice but to evacuate the settlement of it gets out. After they heard this, Team RWBY went to deal with the Grimm.
After seemingly killing the Megoliath, Team RWBY are surprised when it gets back up to attack them before they are saved by Team BRIR who kill the Grimm. Just as they meet them however, Bram Thornmane arrives and tells Team BRIR to leave. After the encounter, Bram introduces himself to Team RWBY while telling them that Team BRIR were rouge Huntresses and noticed the mysterious device they had on them. Realizing it was on of the devices his conspiracy was using to attract the Grimm, Bram took the device off of Team RWBY's hands under the guise of helping them due to not wanting his plot being discovered this early. After this, he directs them to Atlas Military Lieutenant Colonel Olive Harper, his mole in the military, for further assistance investigating the mysterious device as they leave Essen.

- Essen shares its name with the city in Germany, home of the famous Krupp Works, where many of Germany's steel mills and armament factories were located during the World Wars.
- It was confirmed that, by the end of Volume 8, portals had opened to every location in Solitas, including Essen Village.[1]
