The seventeenth chapter of RWBY: The Official Manga was published for free on the main Viz Media on the RWBY: The Official Manga homepage on April 14th, 2020.

Summary

The chapter starts off with a massive explosion in Vale as people from Beacon Academy and Sun and Neptune working somewhere in Vale overhear it. Roman emergers from the destroyed pit, unharmed while Team RWBY who barely survived follow him. A flashback reveals Team RWBY and Oobeck found bombs in each train cars and decided to disconnected the cars before it reach Vale.

In the present, Roman reveals his real plan wasn't to destroy Vale, but to attract Grimm into the city of Vale to with a surge in negative emotions from citizens. Team RWBY decides to fight the hordes of Grimm before they attack innocent citizens. However, Team RWBY soon gets overpowered by them and Ruby is almost killed by an Ursa until Jaune and Pyrrha save her just in time. Nora, Ren, Sun, and Neptune along with Team CFVY decides to help Team RWBY to fight the rest of the Grimm. From the sidelines, Roman notices something felt off as he didn't hear a lot of screams from people being attacked by Grimm.

Meanwhile, Ironwood orders his men to evacuate citizens to safety. This leads to Roman having a major breakdown about how his plans are falling apart thanks to Oobleck and Team RWBY. Before Roman can escape, Ruby manages to stop him attacking with Crescent Rose.

  • The chapter covers the second part of "No Brakes" and the first part of "Breach".
  • While the chapter follows one in a half episode quite closely, the manga's depiction differs, cuts and extends it in several key ways.
    • Ruby trying to call Jaune and his team for backup, but she can't get a signal is cut.
    • Team RWBY, Oobleck and Zwei fighting against the White Fang goons is cut completely.
    • Team RWBY and Oobleck discovers the bombs inside of the train instead of each train cars.
    • Weiss giving Blake cartridge of Dust for her weapon is cut.
